01Overview

Cherry Audio builds Yellowjacket as a tribute to the EDP Wasp, a British monophonic synth released in 1978 that combined digital and analog circuitry. The plugin reproduces the Wasp's buzzy tone and drone, from its oscillators to its state-variable filter, and adds newer features such as unison and polyphonic voice modes, an arpeggiator and a multi-voice system. It ships with over 270 presets across categories including leads, arps, pads, basses and strings.

Wasp-Modeled Sound and Synthesis Controls

Yellowjacket's core is a two-oscillator architecture with ramp, pulse and square waves, plus an enhanced modulated pulse wave based on the EDP Gnat. Oscillator sync and a white noise generator are included, along with a mixer for both oscillators.

The filter is a two-pole 12dB state-variable design based on the CD4069 logic chip of the original. It offers lowpass, bandpass and highpass modes, an extra notch mode and a Q resonance control. Two envelopes handle the VCA and filter cutoff, and a syncable LFO provides sine, ramp, sawtooth, square, noise and random waveforms for pitch, filter and amp modulation.

Voice Modes, Multi Panels and Arpeggiator

Yellowjacket offers monophonic, unison, polyphonic (4, 8 or 16 voices) and cycle voice modes with glide. Its Multi voice modes add three extra mini synth panels, each with its own pitch, pan, filter frequency and VCA attack and release settings. Presets such as Hard Panned and Slightly Detuned help simulate variation between chained synths.

The arpeggiator includes Chance for step probability and Humanise for timing and pattern randomness. Speaker emulation with Hiss and Hum controls adds a lo-fi character, and the Global FX panel includes an Octafuzz overdrive, phaser, flanger/chorus, three syncable echoes and five reverb types.
