01Overview

Softube developed the DS5 in close partnership with Weiss Engineering. Each of its five bands applies the DS1 compression design, so you can shape dynamics across separate frequency ranges. Macro controls give a fast starting point, while a button on each band opens the full DS1-MK3 options for detailed tweaking. The plugin offers three crossover filter modes and is designed for low latency.

Multiband dynamics built on the Weiss DS1

Each of the five bands runs a code port of the Weiss DS1, so the compression character is carried across the whole multiband structure. This lets you control compression within specific frequency ranges on mix buses, vocals, drums and mastering chains.

The developer describes the design as focused on transparency. The crossover filters are phase-compensated 24 dB/octave filters, selectable between Static Phase, Dynamic Phase and Linear Phase modes.

Macro controls and per-band tweaking

The macro controls and included presets make it quick to find a starting sound. The presets were designed by Bob Katz, Jonathan Wyner, Maor Appelbaum and Philippe Weiss and are intended as starting points to adjust.

When you need more precision, you can open each band's DS1-MK3 interface and edit its full set of options. Softube lists low latency as a design goal, including in the Dynamic and Static Phase modes and in the newly designed safety limiter.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

Is Weiss DS5 a crossgrade?

Yes. The product is sold as a crossgrade for customers who already own the Weiss DS1-MK3.

What filter modes does the DS5 offer?

The crossover filters can be set to Dynamic Phase, Static Phase or Linear Phase. All three are phase-compensated 24 dB/octave filters.

How does the DS5 differ from the DS1?

The DS5 applies a line-by-line code port of the DS1 to each of its five bands, and it adds macro controls for faster use.
