Sound and Character of the Violin Section
Big Fish Audio recorded a six-piece violin section using vintage Neumann U-87 and Royer ribbon microphones, run through an SSL console. The developer used close mics, room mics and string positioning based on session notes from old Motown and Philly Soul recordings.
The playing style is intentionally not classical. The developer aimed to keep the minor imperfections that gave those original sections their character. The result is a more intimate and more human sound than orchestral sampled string libraries.
Three group sizes are included: 2, 6 and 12 players. The 2-violin patches suit smaller sections in the mix, while the 12-violin patches give a bigger section size without the sound of a large recording hall.
