Sound and Character of the Grindhouse Instruments

The patches in Grindhouse were sampled from instruments with a strong, unusual tone rather than pristine studio sound. The developers say the aim was a library that sounds like it was recorded from old vinyl and a worn film print.

The patch collection includes genre-specific sounds such as a spaghetti western electric guitar, a melodramatic string section and 1960s jungle-movie drums. Several patches contain audio clips taken from public domain grindhouse films, which adds a found-footage flavor to compositions.

GUI Controls for Degrading and Shaping Sound

Grindhouse includes a graphical interface that lets you push the sound further into lo-fi territory. Distortion adds simulated tube-amp drive, and Tape Saturation adds analog tape-style compression and limiting for a fatter sound.

Bass, Treble, Hi-Cut and Lo-Cut let you shape the tone, with Hi-Cut dulling the top end and Lo-Cut thinning the low end. Reverb offers 10 convolution reverbs, and a tempo-synced delay section is available. Mod-Wha turns the keyboard's mod wheel into a wah-wah pedal, and Wobble adds unpredictable pitch fluctuation. A Noise control adds hum and crackle.

Who Grindhouse Is For

Grindhouse suits songwriters, producers and composers working on indie music, TV, film or video games who want grit and character. It is well suited to funky, crate-digger style loops and tracks.

The library is also designed for scoring retro-style soundtracks in genres such as kung fu, spaghetti western, blaxploitation, Italian crime and low-budget horror.
