01Overview

Verticale takes its name from the Italian word for an upright piano, and the instrument is built around one: a sampled upright recorded both natural and with felt. The developer says it was captured with four layers of felt, and its natural patch is described as pure and warm while the felt patch is richer and more mellow. Onboard effects and a cassette signal extend the sound toward lo-fi and cinematic textures. It runs inside Kontakt and is offered in VST2, AU and AAX formats.

Mic Positions and Piano Tone

Verticale offers three mic positions, each a stereo pair. The room pair uses AKG C414 microphones, and the spot mics are an AEA N22 active ribbon pair and a Neumann K184 small diaphragm condenser pair. You can switch between mics in the interface or route each to its own channel to mix them separately in your DAW.

The developer suggests blending the cassette signal with the microphones to create new textures. Because the mic positions sit side by side in one instrument, you can shape the piano's character from bright and close to more distant and airy without loading a second patch.

Lo-Fi Cassette and Built-In Effects

The cassette signal is made by passing the samples through an old 4-track cassette recorder set to record at high speed, then playing the tape back at minimum speed. The result is pitch-shifted and warped, giving a lo-fi character.

Two sends feed reverb and delay, each with multiple modes. A Color control works like a tilt EQ, darker and fuller toward the left and thinner and brighter toward the right. A Sync toggle switches delay between tempo-synced values and milliseconds. The Cassette section adds Crunch for tape saturation and Lo-Fi, a macro controlling bit depth and sample rate reduction. Selecting mono adds further vintage character.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to run Verticale?

Verticale requires Kontakt. The developer lists Kontakt Player 7.7 or higher as the system requirement, and the instrument is supported by the free Kontakt Player.

What plugin formats does Verticale come in?

Verticale is available in VST2, AU and AAX, and as a Kontakt instrument.

What is the cassette signal in Verticale?

It is a processed version of the samples, made by recording them to an old 4-track cassette recorder at high speed and playing back at minimum speed. This produces a pitch-shifted, warped, lo-fi sound.

Can I mix the microphone positions separately?

Yes. You can switch between mic positions in the interface, or route them to different channels to mix them separately in your DAW.
