01Overview

Tremolator covers two jobs in one effect: classic tremolo and rhythmic gating. Its tremolo modeling is based on the waveforms of older hardware, and its waveshape editor lets you adjust the modulation shape. Switch to a squarewave and the effect becomes an auto-gate that can lock to MIDI tempo and step through patterns, making it useful for both guitar-style modulation and remix-style chopping.

Vintage Tremolo Sound and Waveshape Control

Soundtoys says it measured the waveforms of several older hardware units and recreated them with the custom LFO waveshape editor built into Tremolator. The plugin is described as emulating the tremolo of the Fender Vibrolux guitar amp and the Wurlitzer electric piano.

An Analog mode emulates moving in and out of analog hardware, which the developer presents as a way to add character to the tremolo. Because the waveshape is editable, the same tool can produce smooth tremolo or a harder, gated sound.

Beat-Synced Auto-Gate and Rhythm Editor

With MIDI sync switched on, the tremolo locks to tempo, and you can choose note values such as 1/8 and 16th notes. Soundtoys also includes a programmable Rhythm Editor for writing custom gate patterns and a library of grooves that can be loaded and edited.

Swing, shuffle and accents can be added to a pattern, and the Waveshape Editor can be used to tighten or loosen the gate time. These options make Tremolator suited to rhythmic chopping of pads, chords and guitars.
