01Overview

Transistor Revolution MKII is a drum instrument built around the sounds of two classic analog drum machines of the 1980s. Wave Alchemy developed it as a redesign of the original Transistor Revolution, with a new graphical interface modeled on the front panels of the TR-808 and TR-909. Each drum sound is built from many recorded samples, and the sound engine runs inside Kontakt. The instrument is available for Windows and macOS.

Sound Design and Sample Engine

Wave Alchemy says the instrument's drum sounds were recorded from the original analog machines and combined into multi-layered samples. Each control on the panel scans smoothly through these samples, so a single knob turn can change the character of a sound in real time.

The developer also describes a pool of recorded variations for each sound that cycle at random each time a sound is played, which is intended to reproduce the small differences found in analog hardware. Velocity and controller data can be used to shape the sounds live, which gives a more expressive response than fixed one-shot samples.

Sequencing, Mixing and Workflow

The instrument includes a TR-style 16-track step sequencer with accent control, host sync, swing and shuffle, and a range of advanced parameter settings. A dedicated 10-track mixer offers individual processing, volume and pan for each drum sound, along with dual delay and reverb units using custom impulse responses.

The master section includes a multi-track tape machine, compression and master EQ. A modular preset browser can recall drum patterns, mixer channels and tape or master bus settings together, and 600 patterns are included.
