01Overview

Roland's TR-707 plugin brings the classic 1985 Rhythm Composer into a digital audio workstation. The developer says it uses Analog Circuit Behavior technology to model the original PCM output stage and the analog envelope and amplifier stages that followed the converter. The package includes all 15 original sounds and 64 original patterns, plus 43 new patterns and kits aimed at modern styles. Producers can adjust tuning, decay, attack, snappy and the PCM clock, parameters the original hardware did not offer.

Sound and character of the TR-707 plugin

The original TR-707 used a low-resolution sample playback engine, and its sound was shaped by quantization noise, clock deviations and analog circuitry after the D/A converter. Roland says the plugin starts from the original PCM wave data and models these quirks, so the lo-fi punch of the hardware carries over.

Beyond the vintage behavior, the plugin lets you go further. Roland describes options for overdriving the internal circuitry, changing how each PCM waveform behaves, and adjusting the PCM clock from 6.25 kHz to 100 kHz. Sounds that stay close to the original and sounds that drift far from it are both available.

Sequencer, workflow and skins

The sequencer has an expanded edit panel with individual lanes for each instrument, including mute, solo and adjustable shuffle. Each step can have per-step accent, hard or weak hits, alternate sounds, three types of sub-steps and nine types of flams.

Patterns and audio or MIDI clips can be dragged and dropped directly onto DAW tracks or cells, and the interface is resizable. Original and aged skins are included, along with LCD-style sequencer windows. Multiple outputs allow separate effects processing, for example with ZENOLOGY FX.
