01Overview

The JUNO-106 plugin models one of the best-known synths of the 1980s, a polysynth Roland introduced in 1984 as an affordable instrument. Its single DCO, fat sub-oscillator, characterful filter and built-in chorus are the core of the design. The plugin is built to sit inside a DAW, with a resizable interface, an integrated patch browser and sync-to-tempo for the LFO, arpeggiator and effects. It suits producers who want the JUNO sound in a software workflow, whether for basses, plucked tones or pads.

Sound, character and the JUNO chorus

Roland says the plugin is built using its Analog Circuit Behavior process, which analyzes original hardware, circuit diagrams and historical data to recreate the instrument's circuit behavior, including its known quirks and instabilities.

The chorus is a central part of the sound. The software version includes the two selectable chorus modes of the original, modeled in detail, with the chorus noise now adjustable. Additional chorus options, plus reverb, delay, flanger and overdrive effects, are included onboard.

The Circuit Mod function sweeps multiple internal trims with one macro control, and the Condition parameter simulates the effects of aging. Together they move the sound from a factory-fresh unit to a worn one.

Workflow, browser and SYSTEM-8 integration

The integrated browser searches across all installed patch banks, and you can sort results, rate favorites, add notes and make quick changes in the tweak panel. Polyphony is adjustable from two to eight notes.

The plugin also works with Roland's SYSTEM-8 synth. You can match the plugin panel to the SYSTEM-8 for one-to-one control, or use PLUG-OUT to run the SYSTEM-8 as a standalone JUNO-106.
