01Overview

TIMBRE works on the formants that define a sound's tonal identity rather than its pitch or its boosted frequency bands. That makes it a different kind of tool from an EQ or a pitch shifter. zplane describes it as a plugin for producers, mixing engineers and sound designers, and it can be applied to individual sources or to a complete mix. Processing runs in real time with 23ms of latency at 44.1kHz.

Shaping Timbre Instead of Pitch or EQ

TIMBRE's main control set centers on shifting formants, which are the resonant frequency regions that give a voice or instrument its identity. Shifting these regions changes how a sound feels in the mix without changing the note it plays.

The plugin offers a wide range of ±36 semitones of timbre-shifting, so you can make subtle adjustments or push a source into extreme territory. A Linked mode uses one knob to shape the whole spectrum, while Unlinked mode lets the High and Low Bands be processed separately, with per-band On and Solo controls for focused adjustments.

The Resolution control adjusts processing detail, and the Dry/Wet control blends in the unprocessed signal for more controlled results.

Carrier Modes and Vocoding

A dedicated carrier section lets you use the built-in noise generator as a source for whisper-like textures, or feed an external sidechain signal into TIMBRE for formant-vocoder effects. Using a sidechain, you can transfer the envelope of one sound onto another.

This section is useful for sound design work where the goal is a new texture rather than a transparent correction, and for vocal effects that depend on intelligibility.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What is TIMBRE used for?

TIMBRE reshapes the timbre of vocals, drums, instruments, loops and full mixes by shifting their formants. It can add weight, change vocal character, help instruments sit in a mix, or create vocoder-style effects.

What formats and operating systems does TIMBRE support?

TIMBRE is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats. It runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11, and on 64-bit macOS 13 or later with Intel and Silicon processors.

How is TIMBRE different from an EQ or pitch shifter?

An EQ boosts or cuts frequency bands, and a pitch shifter changes the note. TIMBRE transforms the formants that define a sound's identity, leaving pitch unchanged.
