01Overview

Ultrasonic content above the audible range can still cause trouble. When it reaches nonlinear stages such as peak limiters, compressors, distortion devices or analog-style capture, it generates intermodulation distortion, and some of those new partials can fall into the audible band. Tokyo Dawn Labs designed TDR Ultrasonic to reduce this problem at the source. The plugin is a filter for oversampled chains, offering traditional filter controls alongside tools for auditioning and dithering ultrasonic material.

Filtering and Ultrasonic Gate Controls

The core of TDR Ultrasonic is linear phase filtering with a continuously variable slope, so you can shape the cutoff to suit the material rather than picking from fixed steps. An ultrasonic gate adds a dynamic element, letting the filter respond to the amount of ultrasonic content present.

The developer also includes a control that enforces infinite attenuation at Nyquist, along with a Bypass All function for A/B testing the effect of ultrasonic filtering across a whole mix.

Monitoring and Alternatives to Filtering

Bat Mode lets you listen to the ultrasonic content directly, which makes it easier to judge what the filter is removing. A precise ultrasonic frequency analyzer shows the spectrum and the filtering in action.

For an alternative to cutting, the HF Noise generator dithers ultrasonic content. The freely resizable, hardware accelerated interface supports full-screen use.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What is TDR Ultrasonic used for?

TDR Ultrasonic filters ultrasonic content before it reaches nonlinear processing such as limiters, compressors and distortion. This reduces intermodulation distortion that can otherwise fold into the audible range.

Which formats and operating systems does TDR Ultrasonic support?

TDR Ultrasonic is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats, all 64-bit. It runs on Windows and macOS. Windows supports VST2 and VST3 in 32-bit and 64-bit, while AAX is 64-bit only.

What do I need to use TDR Ultrasonic?

TDR Ultrasonic runs as a plugin inside a compatible host. On Windows it requires Vista or above, and on macOS it requires macOS 10.9 or above.

Does TDR Ultrasonic support high sample rates?

Yes. The plugin supports sample rates up to 20 MHz.
