Tape-Inspired Sound and Character
KLANG built the TAPED collection around the warmth and imperfection of tape. The developer says the instruments bring back the saturation and wow and flutter associated with tape machines, and that the collection is meant to evoke memories of listening to radio plays and recording demos on a four-track.
The Echolette Choir takes its character from a vintage tube tape delay. KLANG ran various sound sources through the machine and set the feedback high enough for it to self-oscillate. According to the developer, the tube's distortion survives in the output and sounds warm and organic.
The approach suits producers looking for lo-fi texture and happy accidents rather than clean, precise tones. Its imperfections are the point, so the instrument fits best where character matters more than transparency.
