01Overview

SubLab XL is the expanded version of the SubLab bass synth. The developer describes it as more features, more FX, modulation, macros and new sounds. The plugin lets you mix and match up to four effects and rearrange them to shape a sound. A Super Oscillator can layer saw, triangle or square waves into supersaws or simpler moog-style bass tones. The included packs cover genres from Reese and 808 bass to clean subs. It runs in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX on Windows and macOS.

Sound Design and Effects Chain

SubLab XL's effects section offers six distortion flavors, a waveshaper with sine and linear fold options, a tape effect with hiss and wobble controls, a bitcrusher with decimation and bit mode, and a compressor with auto sidechain and mix amount controls. You can choose up to four of these and reorder them.

The Super Oscillator layers saw, triangle or square waves. It offers dry/wet mix, tune and detune for thickness, and width controls for stereo spread. The developer positions it for creating thick supersaws as well as subtle bass tones.

Modulation, Macros and Sound Libraries

The LFO section modulates up to two parameters at a time, with 18 routing options, sine, triangle, saw, square and noise waveforms, and rate control with BPM sync. This suits rhythmic and sweeping bass movement.

Two macro controls can each map up to 10 parameters. Every preset arrives with parameters already assigned, and you can drag and drop to change them. Nine factory bass packs are included, and over 300 samples were recorded from analog drum machines and modular gear, including the Roland TR-808, Waldorf Blofeld and Nord Lead.
