01Overview

Circle2 is the second version of Future Audio Workshop's Circle synth, reworked around a single-window interface. Instead of spreading parameters across submenus and external windows, it places them on one surface, and modulation is set by dragging color-coded circles to knobs. The plugin combines analog-modeled oscillators, wavetable oscillators and a newer VPS oscillator, with 300+ included patches and native NKS support for Native Instruments controllers.

Sound Design Workflow and Modulation

Circle2 is built around a simple modulation model. Modulators such as wavetable LFOs, ADSR envelopes and a step sequencer are represented as circles that you drag onto a control. Hovering a circle over a knob previews the connection before you commit to it, which makes it easier to explore sound without opening a matrix.

The plugin also includes a randomize function, a MIDI note arpeggiator with swing and DAW timing sync, and visual MIDI learn with range adjustment. A 16-step sequencer can output note data, so rhythmic patterns can be built inside the instrument.

VPS Oscillator and Sound Character

The VPS (vector phase shaping) oscillator is the most distinctive addition in this version. It glues together a pair of sine waves at set frequencies, and two parameters control those frequencies and where they join, giving direct access to the waveform's harmonics. Future Audio Workshop describes its results as ranging from gritty bass to pads and leads.

The oscillator set also includes four analog oscillators and four wavetable oscillators, with 110 wavetable shapes included. You can import your own wavetables using a separate app. The effects section includes analog-modeled filters, a bucket delay and tube distortion, with reverb, chorus and echo effects.
