01Overview

Stator is a saturation-category effect from the developer Sinevibes that focuses on tape speed instability. It models the uneven motor rotation and tape feed that cause wow and flutter, and the friction between tape and tape head that causes scrape flutter. Together these produce a complex speed modulation signal. The result is pitch drift and lo-fi jitter similar to worn-out audio and video cassette players, with a vintage character suited to processing a wide range of material.

Best for

  • Lo-fi tape effects
  • Pitch drift on synths
  • Vintage vocal processing
  • Worn cassette sounds
  • Stereo widening

Sound Character and Modulation Controls

Stator combines 13 DSP algorithms built to simulate tape machine speed wobble. Each of its three modulation sources, pitch wow, flutter and scrape flutter, has its own depth control, so you can shape the balance between slow drift and fast jitter.

Sinevibes says each modulation component uses its own stereo widening formula. A variable stereo phase offset and adjustable channel crosstalk add chorusing and phasing artefacts, which broaden the image and give the sound a vintage quality. A built-in feedback loop adds further colouration when you want a denser, more coloured result.

Workflow, Channel Formats and Interface

Stator supports mono to mono, mono to stereo and stereo to stereo channel configurations, which covers most common insert setups. Lag filters on all continuous parameters smooth changes and prevent clicks while you adjust settings during playback.

The interface uses colour-coded graphic elements. Parameter names, mapping, values and units are consistent between the graphic interface and host automation, so automation lanes are easy to read. Built-in preset management is included, and the window can be scaled up to 200 percent.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does Stator support?

Stator is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats. It runs as a 64-bit plugin on Windows and macOS.

What do I need to run Stator?

On macOS you need version 10.9 or later, 64-bit only, on an Intel or M1 Apple processor. On Windows you need Windows 8.1 or later, 64-bit only, on an x86 PC processor.

What does Stator simulate?

Stator simulates tape speed fluctuations: wow and flutter from uneven motor rotation and tape feed, and scrape flutter from tape friction against the tape head. It produces pitch drift and lo-fi jitter.

Is there a trial version?

Yes, Stator offers a trial version.
