Rated 4.6/5 on Plugin Boutique (43 ratings)

Dipole is a through-zero flanger plugin by Sinevibes. It uses two delay lines, with one able to run earlier or later than the other, to create jet-plane swooshes, warped cancellations and wide stereo effects.

01Overview

Dipole recreates a studio technique that once required two tape machines running in parallel. Its two delay lines can move through the zero point in time, where the signal changes character. With positive feedback the result is a spectral swoosh, and with negative feedback the output warps and cancels itself out. The plugin gives you manual control of the zero point as well as modulation from a built-in multi-waveform generator, so it covers flanging, chorusing and psychedelic stereo widening in one effect.

Best for

  • Jet-plane flanger sweeps
  • Psychedelic stereo widening
  • Warped feedback effects
  • Tempo-synced chorusing
  • Guitar and synth flanging

Through-Zero Sound and Feedback Modes

The core of Dipole is a flanger engine with through-zero timing and two feedback modes. Positive feedback gives the classic jet-plane sweep, while negative feedback pushes the signal into warped, self-cancelling territory. Moving the time difference through zero is what produces the transition between these two characters.

The developer describes the plugin as recreating this effect with higher fidelity and more convenience than the original tape-based setups. A low-cut filter and feedback self-levelling are included to keep the sound stable at extreme settings.

Modulation, Control and Workflow

Modulation comes from a generator with four waveforms and a variable stereo phase offset, which can sync to host tempo and transport. You can also set the zero point by hand. Lag filters on continuous parameters keep adjustments smooth and click-free.

Dipole supports mono to mono, mono to stereo and stereo to stereo channel configurations. Built-in preset management and a window that scales up to 200% make it practical to recall settings and work comfortably on different screens.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats is Dipole available in?

Dipole is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats.

Which operating systems does Dipole support?

Dipole runs on Windows and macOS. On macOS it requires 10.9 or later with an Intel or M1 processor, and on Windows it requires Windows 8.1 or later on an x86 PC. Both platforms are 64-bit only.

Does Dipole have a trial?

Yes, Dipole offers a trial version.

What does through-zero flanging mean in Dipole?

Dipole's two delay lines can pass through the zero point in time relative to each other. That crossing creates a distinct sound transition, which is the effect the plugin is built around.
