SSL Blitzer: Multi-Character Compressor Plugin by Solid State Logic

Blitzer's core is a classic analogue-style knee compressor. Solid State Logic describes the plugin as capable of everything from soft, saturating compression to brick-wall limiting, and the 10 compression curves are the main way to shape that range. Each curve has a distinct shape and tone.

The DRIVE control adds color to a signal, from gentle warmth to heavier decimation. At a 1:1 ratio, the plugin can also be used purely for soft saturation and gentle harmonics without compressing the signal. ATTACK and RELEASE controls let you match the response to your source, and a TRANSIENTS control lets you bring back some of the original dynamics of the signal.

AUTO GAIN keeps output levels steady based on the threshold and ratio, which makes it easier to compare settings. The MIX control blends the processed signal with the dry one for parallel compression.

The detection sidechain includes a high-pass filter, which keeps low frequencies from triggering the compressor. Solid State Logic recommends it for drum buses. A bell filter in the detection path can help tame harsh or unruly vocals. The BLITZ! mode engages all controls at once, intended for slamming room microphones or a full mix.
