01Overview

Space Age 555 is an effects plugin from Audiority that models the sound of a vintage tape echo unit. The developer describes it as a simulation of the Roland Chorus Echo RE-501 and SRE-555, the larger sibling of the Space Echo RE-201, released in the late 1970s. Alongside tape delay, the plugin combines a BBD chorus and a spring reverb in one processor, aimed at warm, organic echo textures. It runs as a plugin on Windows and macOS.

Tape Echo, Chorus and Spring Reverb Character

The core of Space Age 555 is a tape echo model with six echo modes. Audiority kept the original fake stereo mode of the hardware, in which the outputs of the unit's sections are split between the left and right channels. This gives a wider, more unusual stereo image than a standard stereo delay.

The plugin also includes a BBD chorus and a spring reverb. These can be blended in with their own level controls, so you can move from subtle modulation to a more pronounced, washy space while keeping the tape delay as the foundation of the sound.

Controls for Fine-Tuning the Echo

Beyond the classic controls, Space Age 555 adds parameters for tuning the unit. Age, Feedback and Motor Speed trimmers let you adjust the character of the tape path, while Baxandall bass and treble tone controls shape the tonal balance of the repeats.

Tempo sync keeps delay times locked to your project, and a ducking function lets the echo step back while the dry signal plays. A bypassable direct signal and a mix control let you set the balance between dry and processed sound. The interface is resizable to suit your screen.
