01Overview

Solo Vibraphone is a sampled vibraphone built for Kontakt, recorded by Cinematique Instruments with Australian percussionist Michael Askill. The instrument covers a range of 4½ octaves and offers three articulation groups: regular mallets, bowed and prepared. Onboard effects, an eight-step arpeggiator and several reverb types are included, so the instrument can be used for sequenced patterns as well as sustained parts.

Articulations and Sound Character

The Mallets group contains open and muted articulations that stay close to a natural vibraphone sound. With the Pedal button enabled, notes play muted by default and switch to open when the sustain pedal (CC 64) is pressed. The Hold setting plays only open notes and lets you adjust an overall length.

The bowed articulation is made by stroking the metal bars with a bow, giving a slow attack. The prepared articulations use coins, spoons, spatulas, washers and folded paper placed on the bars. They can be played individually or mixed through the Custom option. The Assign and Random buttons let you map specific articulations to keys or distribute them across the keyboard.

The samples were recorded with close-up condenser microphones, the developer says, to give a stereo sound with no room, so you can add your own reverb afterwards.

Arpeggiator, Effects and Workflow

An eight-step sequencer with a voicing engine on each step lets you build patterns quickly. Built-in effects include an octaver, chorus and a low-resolution bit crusher. The instrument also includes several reverb types, among them a type the developer calls Infinite.

The library is compact at about 1200 samples and 600 MB of compressed data, so it loads without requiring a large disk footprint.
