01Overview

Rotary SD-147 is an effects plugin from Slate Digital that models the rotating speaker cabinet, the Leslie-style design long associated with organ recordings. The developer describes it as an accurate model of the cabinet, covering its two rotors, cabinet reflections, tube amplifier, crossover, saturation, and acceleration behavior. It also adds controls the physical cabinet never had, such as silencing motor noise, stopping the rotors at a set angle, and syncing rotation to project tempo.

Rotor Modeling, Speed Control and Automation

The plugin uses two rotor models: a horn for the mids and highs and a drum for the lows. Each rotor has its own gain and realistic acceleration and deceleration, so the transitions between speeds sound like a physical cabinet spinning up and down.

The speed switch has three positions: Slow (Chorale), Stop, and Fast (Tremolo). Per-rotor Speed Slow and Speed Fast knobs set the rotation rates, and Accel and Decel knobs control how quickly the rotors move between them. The speed switch can be automated or mapped to a MIDI controller or keyswitch, which allows speed changes during a live performance or within a song arrangement. Tempo Sync locks the rotation to the project tempo, with rates shown as multipliers and divisors.

Every parameter is DAW-automatable, so speed and depth can change over the course of a track.

Virtual Mic Placement and Cabinet Controls

Rotary SD-147 includes ten microphone models from the ML-1A Virtual Microphone System for the horn and baffle, with a VMS Intensity control. No separate VMS purchase is required.

For the horn, three preset stereo or mono setups (90°, 180°, and mono) are available, with manual control over distance, offset, and angular width. For the baffle, two setups offer manual distance and position around the cabinet.

Mic Bleed can be switched off so each microphone captures only its own rotor. The plugin also offers Brake to Position, which stops the rotors at any angle, and adjustable cabinet size and depth. The mechanical noise level can be scaled from fully noisy to silent, independent of the audio signal.
