01Overview

Rhythmic Origins is built around a collection of rare and specialty concert drums and hand percussion instruments, recorded by UK percussionist David Oliver at several studios in England. The library covers bass drums, Calabash, box drums, large and small hand drums, metal, tonal and wood instruments, and miscellaneous percussion. Multiple microphone positions let you shape each sound, from close, detailed hits to wider room tones. The instrument runs inside Kontakt and includes modulation, arpeggiation and a modular effects rack.

Sound Sources and Sample Detail

The library contains 73 instruments sampled in 24 bit / 48 kHz uncompressed PCM WAV format, totaling 77,156 stereo samples and about 30.4 GB installed. Instruments range from subtle hand percussion to large concert bass drum strikes. Recording locations include Whitehouse Studios in Somerset, Bell Music in London, and David Oliver's own Somerset studio. Close and room microphone positions can be mixed for each instrument, and separate mic positions are included for a large Verdi Taiko drum, a custom Gran Casa and several African hand drums.

Because the library covers so many instruments, it works well as a source of distinct textures for percussion parts, cinematic hits and layered rhythms.

Controls, Modulation and Effects

The interface offers a multi-layer control layout with an adaptable LFO, 12 filter types including lowpass, highpass and FX filters, and glide options. The LFO offers selectable shape, target, speed, intensity, tempo sync and fade-in time. Filters and LFOs can be assigned to velocity, mod wheel, expression, aftertouch, key position and step-sequencer control.

The arpeggiator provides a velocity table and control over direction, timing, swing, randomization and duration, and a key and scale lock keeps melodic output within common scales. An FX rack holds up to 8 modules chosen from 27 DSP effects, which can be ordered freely. The convolution reverb includes 99 rooms, halls, chambers and outdoor environments, plus 40 custom FX impulses.
