01Overview

Retronaut is an effects plugin built around a multi-voice vibrato and chorus engine. You can mix from a single vibrato voice up to four voices, and the mix is continuously variable, so you can search for sweet spots between them. The plugin adds LoFi character modeled on older equipment, including bucket brigade chips, tape cassettes, vinyl records and voltage-controlled filters. Its photorealistic interface can be resized to suit your screen.

Chorus, Vibrato and LoFi Degradation

The core of Retronaut is its modulation. The multi-voice engine moves from one vibrato voice to four, building a rich chorus as you add voices. Beyond modulation, the plugin includes several ways to age a signal, such as warm dirt and grit, wow and flutter, and dusty crinkles and crackles.

The Diverge controls offset the voices to create evolving movement. You can spread voices across the stereo field, delay them progressively, warp their phase, or give each voice its own LFO rate. The Feed control routes each voice back into the others to build a feedback network, and Lag can be combined with the filters for dampening to produce a modulated reverb-like tail.

Tape Saturation and Virtual Analog Filters

Retronaut includes a tape saturation stage that can be used on its own, for a warm, compressed tape sound. You can then shape the result with its high-pass and low-pass resonant filters, which switch between 2 and 4 poles. The filters can also be modulated by the LFO for extra motion.

The plugin processes audio internally at 64-bit and supports any sampling rate, including 192 kHz and higher. Its smart bypass avoids clicks when automating parameters and compensates for latency, and its sleep-on-silence mode reduces CPU use when no processing is needed.
