01Overview

OTO Biscuit 8-bit Effects brings the hardware OTO Biscuit into a plugin format. Softube says the original unit, introduced in the late 2000s, became popular with DJs and electronic producers for its gritty bit-crushing and lo-fi multi-effects. The plugin models both the digital and analog sections of the hardware. Its digital side offers eight bits that can be inverted or mutated, sample-rate reduction, waveshaping, delay and pitch-shifting. The analog side is a smooth filter that can be driven manually or by a built-in step sequencer.

Sound Character and Digital Processing

The Biscuit is built around bit-level control. Each of its eight bits can be inverted or mutated, and sample-rate reduction introduces aliasing that Softube describes as a glittering texture. Waveshaping adds harmonic distortion, and the plugin's visual display shows the shape of each of the eight waveforms as it is applied to the signal.

The delay section has its own dedicated knobs for time and feedback and can sync to the DAW tempo or be set by tapping. Pitch-shifting can be blended with the dry signal, which Softube suggests can produce ringing, bell-like overtones or heavy sub-bass.

Analog Filter and Sequencing

The analog filter is intended to soften the harsh edges of the digital stages. It can be moved manually or driven by the built-in 8-step sequencer, which allows rhythmic filter movement without external modulation.

Softube says a low-latency mode makes the plugin usable for live performance, and the developer highlights drum mangling and sound design during DJ sets as typical uses.
