Sound Sources and the Eerie Board

The core of Nordic Noir comes from a custom-built Eerie Board. The developer built it from screws, rusty springs, bent metal sheets and long nails mounted on a wooden board, then captured it with piezo pickups and processed the results through effects. The 80 sounds in the instrument were created and collected over a period of two years.

The sounds span Drones, Eerie Board, Strings and Unusual categories, covering scraping, hammering and rubbing textures alongside sustained drones and string-based material.

Layering, Modulation and Effects

Nordic Noir builds each sound from three sound layers. Each slot has its own volume and tune, with a range of -36 to 36 semitones.

The ModWheel controls parameter tables for slot volume and tune, as well as the master effects, so parameters can be shifted in real time for dynamic textures. The master effects include a Bit Crusher, Tape Simulation, Overdrive, High- and Low-Pass filters with Resonance, Mid Control and Reverb. Ten separate reverb types are included.

For starting points, the library includes 65 presets in the categories Deep Drones, Strings, Suspense and Mysterious, and a dice function randomizes all parameters.
