01Overview

Marimba from Cinematique Instruments is a sample-based instrument for Kontakt. It covers a range of five octaves, from C2 to C7, and is built around a warm, wooden tone. The developer recorded the instrument in Australia with percussionist Michael Askill, using close-up condenser microphones to capture a dry stereo image, so reverb can be added later in the signal chain. The instrument ships as 300 MB of compressed data.

Three Mallet Articulations and Mixing

The instrument offers three articulations. The hard articulation uses a hard plastic mallet and produces a dry, thin sound with strong percussive attack. The middle articulation uses a typical felt mallet, balancing attack with a warm richness. The soft articulation uses a giant soft mallet for a warm, indirect sound.

An articulation mixer lets you blend the hard articulation into the medium and soft versions, adding attack to those softer sounds. Cinematique Instruments says these combinations offer interesting results.

Arpeggiator, Tremolo and Reverb Options

The arpeggio section is an eight-step sequencer with a voicing divider, where you choose which notes play on each step. Additional effects include an octaver, drive, reverb and delay for further variation.

The tremolo engine is designed for easy use: releasing a key triggers a note, which makes tremolo playing straightforward. Six reverb types are included, covering several room sizes and an 'infinite' setting that places the instrument in a wide space.
