01Overview

Key Detector is designed to replace manual key finding with automated analysis. According to Waves, it works on single samples, full tracks and complex mixes with several instruments. It returns a root note, a major or minor scale, and two likely alternative keys. Its detection is said to hold up even when the pitch of the source is slightly off-tune, which makes it useful for recordings that were not made to a fixed tuning reference.

How Key Detection Works in a Session

Key Detector analyzes the audio you load and reports the root note and scale, along with two alternative candidates. Waves says the detection is powered by its Neural Networks engine, which it describes as precise even on complex material.

This is most useful when you are working with sources whose key is unknown, such as sample packs with no key labels, loops from older projects, or a finished mix you want to pitch-match. The result gives you a starting point for choosing transposition, chord voicings or melodic material without checking by ear first.

Working With Waves Vocal Tuning Plugins

Key Detector can send the detected key to Waves Tune Real-Time, Waves Tune, OVox and Waves Harmony. Using the Transmit button, the key is passed to all active instances of these plugins. Waves notes that the related plugins must be updated to the v14 release for this feature to work.

This links key analysis directly to vocal correction and harmony work, so you do not need to enter the key manually in each tuning or harmonizing instance.
