01Overview

GX-80 Synthesizer is a plugin from Cherry Audio that brings together two analog synthesizers, the GX-1 and the CS-80. The developer says it reintegrates the GX-1's extended features with the CS-80's architecture, with 16 polyphonic voices per layer. Two patches can play at once in a keyboard split or stacked layer mode, each with its own volume and panning controls. The instrument is available in VST3, VST2, AU, AAX and Standalone formats for Windows and macOS.

Best for

Sound Character and the GX-1 and CS-80 Heritage

GX-80 is built around the voicing of two analog classics. Each of its four polyphonic voice ranks includes a voltage-controlled oscillator, resonant highpass and lowpass filters, a noise generator, a sine wave, dual envelope generators and a velocity-sensitive VCA.

The GX-1's oscillator-level filtered waveforms, octave-up triangle wave and invert filter envelope control are all reproduced. The developer states that the GX-1 and CS-80 filters are recreated with precision, so producers familiar with either instrument can expect the same voicing approach.

A ring modulator modeled on the CS-80 processes the summed output of each pair of ranks, using its own independent oscillator.

Workflow, Modulation and Layering

Each layer has its own sub oscillator LFO with sine, sawtooth, ramp, square, sample and hold, and noise waveforms. These LFOs can sync to tempo, which helps with rhythmic modulation.

The dual-layer architecture lets you stack two patches or split them across the keyboard. Discrete layer volume and panning controls make it easier to balance the two sounds in a mix.

The plugin ships with 1,000 presets, according to the developer, giving a starting point before you begin shaping your own patches.
