Excitance: Harmonic Exciter and Bass Enhancer Plugin by Rave Generation

01Overview

Excitance takes its design cues from late-1970s and 1980s harmonic exciter and bass enhancer hardware. Rather than boosting or cutting frequencies like a standard equalizer, it generates new harmonics for the top end and uses dynamics and out-of-phase summation to reshape the bottom end. The developer describes the result as added presence and weight without a significant increase in peak level. All controls sit on one interface.

Sound Shaping and Harmonic Clipping

The exciter and bass enhancer run as two parallel sidechains beside the unprocessed dry signal. Each works on its own frequency range and they never feed into each other, so you can use either one alone or both together on a track, bus or master.

The Timbre control blends two clipper modes. Rectifier is the default and produces a dense, characterful set of harmonics. Cubic is a softer single clipper with DC offset for asymmetry and a gentler, more forgiving character. A transient-aware stage gives sharp attacks more emphasis while leaving sustained tones more relaxed.

Low-End Enhancement and Phase Correction

The bass enhancer uses a tunable low-pass filter and a leveling stage, then sums the result out of phase with the dry signal. Quiet material gets fuller low end, while loud peaks stay largely unchanged.

The Spectral Phase Refractor aligns bass frequencies up to roughly 150 Hz in phase with the rest of the spectrum, a change the developer says restores clarity and apparent bass energy without altering amplitude. It works independently of both sidechains. The master section adds a 6 dB/oct input high-pass filter, a wet/dry Mix with latency compensation, and oversampling up to 4x.
