01Overview

Cobalt Saphira is an effects plugin in the saturation category, built around a harmonic synthesis engine. Rather than applying a single style of distortion, it lets you introduce odd and even harmonics separately and decide which frequencies they are added to. Waves describes it as a way to bring analog warmth and edge into a mix with precise control. The plugin is intended for tracks, buses, groups and mastering chains, and includes a set of presets for master bus processing and common instruments.

Sound and harmonic control

Waves says analog sound's most compelling quality is subtle harmonic distortion, and Saphira is designed around that idea. Even harmonics are used to add sparkle, definition and warmth. Odd harmonics add a rougher, saturation-like edge. You can use either type on its own or combine them.

Because you select the frequencies where harmonics are synthesized, the effect can be aimed at a specific part of the sound rather than the whole signal. Seven modes change the balance between odd and even harmonics, giving you a range of tonal characters from one plugin.

Workflow and typical uses

Saphira is suited to buses, full mixes and masters, where a light touch of harmonic enhancement can add cohesion. It is also aimed at drums, where extra odd and even harmonics can give edge and clarity to the sound.

Modeled tape processing is available as an optional layer to add depth and liveliness. The included presets cover the master bus, groups and various instruments, so you can start from a reference point and adjust the harmonic balance from there.
