01Overview

BOREALIS is built around the idea of an ongoing exchange between the dry input and the wet output. Its envelope follower and modulation system let the reverb react to how you play, rather than sitting as a static tail. The interface is organized around X, Y and Z performance animations, so several parameters can be shaped at once. A mastering section with a parametric EQ and a dual-mode limiter lets you finish the output inside the same plugin. Developer MNTRA Instruments positions it between studio and stage use.

Sound Design With 14 Reverb and Delay Algorithms

BOREALIS includes 14 reverb and delay algorithms. The range covers dark, dreamy reflections with arrhythmic echoes, multiband spaces with adjustable grit, and lush frozen textures with freeze and shimmer. Other algorithms include a syncable echo hall, diffuse ping pong echoes, a metallic resonance mode, and a stereo spring model based on a classic reverb tank.

Several algorithms are modeled on specific sources. Studio draws on a 1940s RCA Victor recording hall in Montreal, and Church uses the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church in Montreal as its reference. The developer also credits Julian Parker for the Echo Hall algorithm.

The developer draws inspiration from guitar pedals and Eurorack effects, and that influence shows in the algorithms' experimental character.

Modulation, Macros and the Mastering Section

The plugin has three modulators with sine, triangle, square, random and stepped shapes, plus custom-drawn curves. An envelope follower adjusts modulation based on the input signal, with adjustable attack, release, gain and threshold. Modulators can also modulate each other and the envelope follower.

The X, Y and Z performance animations provide macro control over several parameters at once. Advanced users can set up more detailed effect behavior.

At the output, a parametric equalizer sits alongside a dual-mode limiter with a modern transparent IIR look-ahead mode and a vintage 1176-style peak mode. These sections can shape and glue the dry and wet signals together.
