01Overview

BLEASS Dragonfly takes a different approach to tremolo. Instead of running at a fixed speed, the effect can follow the pitch of the audio passing through it, a sidechained track, or the notes of incoming MIDI. Producers can use it to make synths, vocals or any melody pulse in step with its own frequencies or with an external bass line. The developer describes it as a way to get the modulated-by-bass sound heard in Billie Eilish's "Xanny".

Tremolo Sync Modes and Source Options

Dragonfly offers four ways to set its tremolo rate. In Self mode, pitch tracking runs on the input track itself. In Sidechain mode, it tracks a separate sidechained signal, so a bass can drive the effect applied to another track. MIDI mode locks the rate to the lowest note received by the plugin, and the tremolo amplitude follows that note's velocity. Manual mode uses a fixed rate set by the Rate knob.

A Source Channel control selects which channel is analyzed in Self and Sidechain modes, and a Gain control sets the input level for MIDI, Self and Sidechain modes.

Shaping the Tremolo Character

Once the rate is set, the Fine control offsets the detected pitch by up to half a semitone in the pitch-tracked modes, and Factor multiplies the detected or set rate to give the final tremolo speed. Smooth controls how quickly rate changes are smoothed, while Attack and Release set how the effect fades in and out.

The Stereo control sets the phase difference between the left and right channels. Mode switches between Simple, a basic tremolo, and Wild, which applies complex waveshaping for a warmer, saturated result. The Wildness control sets the strength of that waveshaping. A Dry/Wet control and an output Gain complete the Mix stage.
