01Overview

The autoharp is a chorded zither with 36 steel strings, and it is often used to add a light, textured shape to a track. Autoharp v3.5 is built for Kontakt and focuses on capturing that sound in a realistic, organic way. Cinematique Instruments recorded the main articulations with a condenser microphone, using four round robins and three velocity layers per note. The result is a library of roughly 900 samples totaling about 700 MB of compressed data.

Articulations and Sound Character

Autoharp v3.5 includes several playing styles. Thumb plucks the strings with a thumb, Hammer uses a piano hammer, and Rough is the plectrum articulation carried over from Autoharp v2. Muted damps the strings for a close, pizzicato-like tone, and Bowed draws a violin bow across the instrument for a distinct, organic sound.

The articulations can be layered. Adding Muted to Bowed, for example, creates combinations that are not possible with a single playing style.

Strumming Engine and Playing Features

The strumming engine provides both strummed notes and dead notes. A step sequencer lets you choose, step by step, whether each step plays a note, a dead note or nothing, and these patterns can be programmed dynamically.

The Strumming Speed Slider sets how quickly the strums occur, from fully quantized to close to a glissando. Glissando and tremolo are also included, with tremolo triggered by the release of a note.
