01Overview

Achromic focuses on heavy rhythm guitar rather than a broad range of tones. Iamlamprey built it around two common complaints about guitar libraries: weak pick attack and overly complicated playing engines. The instrument covers the F1 to D6 range and is laid out for quick writing, so you can sketch riffs without navigating a complex interface. It runs inside the full version of Kontakt and outputs a clean DI signal, which leaves amp and cabinet choice in your hands.

Pick Attack and Round Robin Sound

The developer built Achromic around a non-repeating round robin engine. It alternates two samples on either side, which the developer says removes the machine-gun effect common in sampled guitars. Separately recorded atonal pick attacks are layered on top of the notes, and a single control sets their volume. The same control also drives a transient shaper, so you can add bite to the attack when heavy distortion would otherwise swallow it.

Fret noise and release samples are also recorded individually. They trigger at random on release, and a Fret Noise knob controls their level and decay.

Playing Layout and Writing Controls

Achromic has no key switches. Low-velocity notes produce palm mutes and high-velocity notes produce sustains. Extra articulations sit on the coloured FX keys, including pick scrapes, dead notes, pinch harmonics and quick slides. Pitch bend works with any MIDI controller or with DAW automation.

The Force Downpick switch mutes the up-stroke articulations for riffs that need to hit harder. It can be automated from within your DAW.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to use Achromic?

Achromic requires the full version of Kontakt 5.8 or later. It will not run in the free Kontakt Player. You also need a guitar amp plugin, or you can use Kontakt's built-in amp.

Does Achromic include an amp or cabinet sound?

No. Achromic outputs a raw DI signal, so you provide your own amp or amp simulation. The DI output is also suited to re-amping.

What system resources does Achromic need?

The developer lists 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended), about 0.97 GB of disk space and a stable internet connection for download. The library is compressed from about 2 GB.

How do I play palm mutes and sustains?

Use low velocity for palm mutes and high velocity for sustains. There are no key switches to manage.
