01Overview

Orchestral Viola 1 is built for Instrument X, which runs inside your DAW or standalone and is included free with any Dreamtonics Instrument Expansion. Instead of triggering static audio files, the engine computes legato, breath swells and room interaction in real time. Input your notation, or import a MusicXML file, and the viola part plays back as a performance. The expansion covers both solo writing and dense section work, and its tools let you shape articulations, dynamics and microphone placement.

Solo Viola and Section Sound

Unison mode can generate up to 16 voices from a single viola part, so one line can become a full section. This makes it possible to move between a soloist and an ensemble without changing instruments.

Dreamtonics says the Instrument X simulator is designed to produce lifelike ensemble playback from one performance. Overlapping notes are rendered as separate voices rather than cutting each other off, which helps with chords and contrapuntal lines.

Articulations, Dynamics and Workflow

The Unified Articulation Editor puts performance techniques in one interface and lets you stack articulations on a single note. Predictive Dynamics assigns dynamics based on pitch, note duration and phrase flow, and a manual lane lets you override them.

AI Retakes generate alternative takes for a selected phrase, either across a whole section or targeting specific parameters. MusicXML import carries over tempos, time signatures, articulations and dynamics, and ARA support is available in compatible DAWs.

Requirements and Fit

The expansion runs on Windows 10/11 or macOS 11 and later, on Intel/AMD x64 or Apple Silicon. It needs 4 GB of RAM minimum, 8 GB recommended, and 2 GB of free disk space. Each instrument takes about 160 MB of storage.

Rendering happens fully on your machine, so no internet connection is needed. It suits producers writing string and orchestral arrangements who want a viola that works both as a lead and as part of a section.
