01Overview

This pack extends Hertz Instruments' Hertz Drums 2 with MIDI grooves recorded by drummer Péter Somos. The grooves are built around twists such as broken patterns and odd meters, and they cover time signatures including 5/4, 7/4, 8/4, 9/4, 10/4, 11/8 and 19/16. The developer positions the pack for producers who want to step outside conventional 4/4 beats. Because Somos has a rock and metal background and grew up in Budapest, the developer says he is comfortable with these rhythms. A full copy of Hertz Drums 2 is required to use the pack.

03In depth

Odd Meters and Broken Grooves

The pack contains 520 grooves in time signatures such as 5/4, 7/4, 8/4, 9/4, 10/4, 11/8 and 19/16. Many of the patterns are broken grooves, where the accents and fills shift away from a steady pulse.

The developer links the feel of the grooves to prog-rock acts such as Genesis, Frank Zappa, Yes and King Crimson, to contemporary metal bands such as Dream Theater, Animals as Leaders and Liquid Tension Experiment, and to Balkan music. That range makes the pack useful for composers working in several genres.

Who This Pack Is For

The pack is dedicated to prog-rock, progressive metal and Balkan music. It suits producers who write in odd time signatures and want ready-made starting points instead of programming every pattern by hand.

It is also a fit for drummers and writers who want to learn how odd-meter grooves are constructed. Since the grooves are MIDI, you can audition them in Hertz Drums 2 and adjust them to your own arrangement.
