Zero 1 Synth: Tube and Tape Sampled Virtual Analog Synth by Loot Audio

Rated 4.5/5 on Plugin Boutique (25 ratings)

Zero 1 Synth is a Kontakt instrument from Loot Audio, a single-oscillator virtual analog synthesizer loosely based on the 1982 CS01 monosynth. Its oscillators are sampled after passing through tube overdrive and tape delay.

01Overview

Zero 1 Synth draws on the CS01 monosynth, a 1982 instrument that was an affordable entry point into analog synthesis. Loot Audio did not simply sample the original oscillators. It first ran them through a tube overdrive and a Watkins Copicat tape delay, so the raw waveforms pick up added grit and movement. The result is a virtual analog synth that runs inside Kontakt and offers a range of sampled waveforms, 40 editable patches and 10 layered multi patches to start from.

Sound and Character of the Oscillator Samples

The instrument is built on five oscillator waveforms, each multi-sampled at 24-bit resolution: triangle, sawtooth, 50% square, 25% square and PWM. Processing these waveforms through tube and tape stages adds character and motion to the source material, and the developer notes that even the splice in the tape loop contributes to the sound.

The package includes 50 of these tube and tape waveshaped oscillator samples, so the sound is defined by the recorded waveforms rather than by generated tones.

Filter Modes and Patches

Zero 1 Synth lets you switch between Mk I and Mk II CS01 filter emulations. The Mk I setting provides a 12dB/oct filter and the Mk II setting a 24dB/oct filter, and the control panel changes its appearance to match the original variants. The filter emulation was developed by Stephen Howell at Hollow Sun.

The instrument ships with 40 editable example patches that can be saved, along with 10 example layered multi patches for starting points on fuller sounds.
