01Overview

Fameboy is a Kontakt instrument from Loot Audio built around drum sounds with a nasty, lo-fi character. Its voice page offers 16 channels, each with a selection of samples and four playback styles. Sequencers can export patterns into your DAW by drag and drop, and a master section adds crush, saturation, compression and stereo width. The developer describes it as a classic drum synthesizer updated for modern production, and it is not limited to chiptune-style sounds.

Drum Sound and Playback Styles

Each of the 16 voice channels holds up to 16 samples, and each sample has four variations. The Style controls switch between four playback engines. Style A is clean and modern, Style B is gritty and filtered, and Style C and Style D are both gritty, with D differing slightly from C.

Every sound can be shaped further with sound-design controls, and incoming MIDI notes select which sound is being edited, which keeps the workflow fast.

Sequencing, Mixing and Tape Effects

Each sequence can hold up to eight patterns, and patterns can be triggered on the fly using key switches. The MIDI button creates an icon that you drag into a sequencer lane in your DAW for further editing.

Every sound has its own mixer channel with volume, pan, reverb and echo send controls. The Tape Drive section provides controls for emulating tape degradation to add analogue grit to drums.

Who Fameboy Is For

Fameboy suits producers who want raw, lo-fi drum textures for hip-hop, electronic and experimental projects. Its master effects, including bit crushing, sample rate reduction and heavy compression, work across the whole mix.

The instrument also includes a 3D interface with loading animations and a startup sound, which the developer included for fun.
