01Overview

Zen Delay Virtual, shortened to ZDV, is a software delay effect developed by Liquid Sky with Erica Synths and VCV developer Raphael Hoffman. It is based on the Zen Delay hardware unit but is described as an addition to that hardware rather than a straight copy. The plugin is aimed at playing, experimenting and mutating sounds, with a focus on live use as well as studio work. A free trial is available.

Sound Design and Modulation Controls

The new LFO page controls both the filter and the delay, which the developer says brings rhythmic animation to a sound. The FM and AM controls add further options for chorus effects, drones and continuously changing textures.

Delay timing includes triplet and dotted note values, which the developer says were requested by users of the hardware. Swing timings are also part of the design.

Unlike the hardware, the routing between the delay and filter stages can be changed, including placing the filter inside the feedback loop.

Presets and Typical Uses

A preset manager lets you save your own effect settings. The plugin ships with a selection of presets from sound designers linked to the developer, including Mijk van Dijk, Nerk from TokTok, Dr Walker of Air Liquide and Kiss Nuka.

The developer positions ZDV as an effect for drums, basses, keys, guitars, vocals, FX and Foley, and for a range of electronic and other genres.
