This upgrade is intended for owners of Ultra Analog VA-2 or VA-1. Applied Acoustics Systems positions the VA-3 as a streamlined synth with a new Home view, a browser organized by Packs, Sounds, Categories and Creators, and two independent timbres that can be stacked or split. The full version of Ultra Analog VA-3 is sold separately.

Sound Design Features and What Is New

The VA-3 adds four performance macros per layer that respond to user-defined MIDI controls. Each sound has modulation, timbre, envelope and effect morphing assignments that can be played in real time.

The multi-mode filter now includes a ladder-type low-pass response, and the developer says the filters stay musical under extreme modulation. Microtonal tuning is supported through Scala scale files and reference note frequency tuning.

The multi-effects module includes reverb, equalizer, compressor, tremolo and guitar amplifier processors, and the five effect slots can be reordered.

Factory Library and Legacy Presets

The VA-3 ships with a new factory library of 560 sounds created by a team of sound designers, including Richard Devine, Christian Halten, Jerry Kovarsky and Niall McCallum. Applied Acoustics Systems also revised the 648 VA-2 legacy sounds for consistent gain staging and unity-gain effects.

The library covers 32 sound categories, from arpeggios and basses to pads, leads, plucks and sequences. VA-2 banks can be used by copying them into the VA-3 packs folder.
