01Overview

Chromaphone 3 is an instrument plugin from Applied Acoustics Systems that takes an acoustic approach to synthesis. Instead of oscillators alone, it models strings, plates, drumheads, membranes, beams, bars and tubes, and lets you mix them to recreate real instruments or invent new ones. Two independent timbres can be stacked or split, and four performance macros per layer respond to MIDI controls you define. The plugin is available for Windows and macOS.

Acoustic Object Synthesis and Resonator Design

The core of Chromaphone 3 is its set of eight physically modelled acoustic resonators. You can combine strings, plates, drumheads, membranes, beams, bars and tubes to imitate familiar instruments or build sounds that do not correspond to any real one.

The developer notes that Chromaphone was the first synthesizer to account for coupling between resonators. The model captures the two-way flow of energy between resonators, which is intended to reproduce the interaction seen in acoustic instruments.

Workflow, Macros and the Expanded Browser

Chromaphone 3 is two-voice multitimbral, so you can layer two timbres or split them across the keyboard. Each layer has four performance macros that can be assigned to modulation, timbre, envelope and effect morphing and played in real time.

The Home view puts the macros in one place for quick tweaking, and the browser can be filtered by Packs, Sounds, Categories and Creators. The multi-effects module includes reverb, equalizer, compressor, tremolo and guitar amplifier processors, and its five slots can be reordered.

For sound design work, the library is a starting point: 420 new factory sounds by a team of named sound designers, plus a remastered set of 676 sounds from Chromaphone 2.
