SAWmonium is a Kontakt instrument from Loot Audio that turns bowed woodsaws, mitre saws and hacksaws into 10 cinematic patches for horror, quirky FX and mysterious textures. It requires the full version of Kontakt.
SAWmonium is built around everyday hand tools played with a cello bow and struck with mallets, rattans and sticks. Loot Audio uses these sources to create strange, unusual effects, from tonal staccatos and growls to sustained drones. The developer says some of the effects recall odd FX from 1960s and 1970s film scores. The library is aimed at composers and sound designers working on horror, suspense and atmospheric scoring.
The bowed sustain patch is tuned and loops, so it can hold a drone for as long as a part needs. Depending on how it is played, it can sound like a gritty glass harmonica or like a melodic percussion instrument when the attack is played with.
The set also includes short tonal staccatos, creepy growls and FX sounds. Loot Audio describes one patch as a nod to the Joker motif from The Dark Knight, which gives a clear reference point for its tone.
SAWmonium uses a GUI with pitch control, attack and delay controls, and EQ. These let you shape each patch to fit a mix without leaving the instrument.
The interface also includes 13 custom impulse responses that can be selected directly on the GUI, so you can change the space around the saw sounds quickly.
