RetroMod LoFreq Classic is a sample-based virtual synthesizer from Tracktion that recreates the sound of 11 classic hardware synths from 1974 to 1995. It is available as a plugin in VST2, AU and AAX formats.
RetroMod LoFreq Classic draws on a library of 13,500 samples taken from vintage hardware, including the Oberheim SEM, Korg MS-20 and Roland TB-303. The instruments were sampled through a range of high-end converters and preamps. Beyond the recorded sounds, the plugin adds a secondary multimode resonant filter, a second oscillator and an XY Pad for shaping tone. The package ships with 358 presets and occupies 3.4 GB on disk.
The core of the instrument is its sampled library. Tracktion sampled 11 synthesizers produced between 1974 and 1995, among them the Yamaha CS-30, Arp Odyssey, Roland SH-101 and Novation Bass Station R., along with the Roland CMU-810 and Doepfer MS-404.
The samples were captured using Avalon U5, A-Design Reddi, Phoenix Audio NiceDI, Universal Audio 2192, RME ADI-2 and VoVox Cables, which gives the library a consistent recording chain across instruments.
A secondary multimode resonant filter sits on top of the sampled sounds, giving you a second stage of tonal shaping. A second oscillator adds weight to the sound, and the XY Pad lets you blend in subtle or more aggressive coloration.
Up to 16 unison voices are available for thicker leads and pads. An integrated arpeggiator generates rhythmic patterns, which suits basslines and pulsing sequences.
