PSI Snare is a Kontakt instrument from Loot Audio built around one high-quality snare drum. Rather than recording a range of different snares, the developer captured a wide spread of tones and effects from a single drum. The instrument is 1.02GB and contains 5,596 samples. The developer says the goal was to give users the flexibility and sound-shaping options of owning a real snare. It requires the full version of Kontakt, version 4.0.2 or later, and will not run in the free Kontakt Player.

Sound Range and Playing Styles

PSI Snare offers 35 playing styles and tunings, with up to 56 velocity layers per hit. The developer recorded the drum at five mic positions: Close (mono), Bottom (mono), Tube (mono), Overhead (stereo) and Room (ambient stereo).

The 35 hits include six tunings, muted snares, open snares, hands, buzzes, flams, brushes, hot rods, rim shots and rim clicks. This variety covers a broad set of musical styles and gives producers a range of textures from one instrument.

Using PSI Snare in Drum Programming and Mixing

According to Loot Audio, the instrument works well as a replacer or enhancer in drum mixes where the original snare recording falls short. It can also be programmed creatively with its editing controls, which can be set to Global or Local mode.

The instrument was recorded in the Studio 2 live room at Paper Stone Studios in Nottingham, England, using audiophile-quality signal paths.
