01Overview

PSI Kick is a kick drum library built for Kontakt. It combines six multisampled kick drums with options for each drum, so producers can build a kick from the core sound up. Each drum offers five microphone positions and up to 27 velocity layers. Trigger and sub sections let you add attack and low end, and the developer describes the phase alignment across the library as rock solid. The library requires the full version of Kontakt.

Layered Trigger and Sub Control

The blend system is the main draw. Two trigger sections let you add bite to the attack using acoustic and electronic trigger samples, with 52 trigger options to choose from. Each trigger has its own tuning, pan, attack, release, and high and low pass filters, and two microphone positions to blend together.

For low end, the sub sections add tuned and miscellaneous sub samples, with tuning and release controlled for each sub individually. Because the trigger and sub layers sit alongside the main kick, you can shape the attack and the body separately.

Microphone Positions and Velocity Layers

Each drum is recorded at five microphone positions, and the library includes up to 27 velocity layers per drum. Together with the 6 to 7 treatment options for each drum, this gives a wide range of kick tones from one instrument.

The developer says the recording used a range of vintage and modern microphones and preamps, including a Telefunken M82 on the kick input, a Neumann FET 47 on the output, and a C414 on the overheads, captured in a 1600 sq ft live room. Velocity sensitivity at lower levels has been improved for a more solid dynamic response.

The library contains 4135 samples totaling over 1GB of data.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to use PSI Kick?

PSI Kick requires the full version of Kontakt. It will not work with the free Kontakt Player. The developer lists full Kontakt 5.8.1 or later as the requirement.

What formats is PSI Kick available in?

PSI Kick is available as a Kontakt instrument.

How can I shape the kick sound?

Two trigger sections and sub sections are layered with the main kick. Each trigger and sub has its own tuning, release and, for triggers, filter and pan controls, so you can adjust the attack and low end separately.
