01Overview

PPG Wave 3.V Version 2 is Waldorf's software revival of the PPG Wave wavetable synthesizer. The 2.0 update adds features borrowed from the Waldorf Microwave, which the developer says was itself inspired by the PPG Wave with input from Wolfgang Palm. The plugin includes more than 100 new wavetables created by Wolfgang Palm, along with the original Waveterm B factory sample library and the original PPG Wave factory sounds. Version 2.0 also adds a resizable interface, user wavetables with an integrated editor, and a "Mutator" patch randomizer.

Wavetable Sound and Character

The plugin is built around wavetable synthesis, the approach behind the original PPG Wave. Waldorf says the update brings Microwave-inspired ideas back to the PPG design. The 2.0 release adds a wavetable editor, so you can create and load your own user wavetables alongside more than 100 new wavetables by Wolfgang Palm and the original PPG Wave factory sounds.

The Mutator randomizer, also inspired by the Microwave plugin, generates new patches from existing settings. It is a quick way to explore unexpected timbres and build starting points for sound design.

Workflow, Polyphony and Automation

The synth supports up to 256 voices per instance, depending on available CPU power, and an 8-part multimode with 8 stereo outputs. This lets you run several layered or split sounds in one instance and route parts to separate channels in your mixer.

Most parameters can be automated from the host or from a MIDI controller. The interface can be resized to suit different screen sizes, which helps when working on laptops or large monitors.
