01Overview

Waldorf has ported its Blofeld hardware synthesizer to software as a plugin. The developer says the sound comes from a wavetable engine that carries the fat, rich character Waldorf users know from the Q, Q+, Microwave and Wave. Its synthesis is based on the PPG synthesizers of the early 1980s. The plugin is compatible with existing Blofeld soundsets and can also control a physical Blofeld over MIDI.

Sound Engine and Synthesis Architecture

Each voice has three oscillators that can run wavetables, virtual analog waveforms or samples. The oscillators can frequency-modulate each other, and the library includes all Microwave II, XT and XTk wavetables. You can also load your own wavetables from .midi or .wav files into 38 user slots.

Each voice has two independent multi-mode filters with filter FM and drive, and you can choose from several drive curves. Four envelopes support multiple envelope modes, and all envelope timings and levels can be modulated.

The sound engine is built for aggressive, bell-like and edgy timbres, which is the PPG-era character the developer emphasizes.

Modulation, Arpeggiator and Workflow

Three LFOs offer adjustable shapes, phase, speed, delay and fade. They can run per voice or globally, and they can sync to the DAW tempo. The modulation matrix has 16 freely assignable slots, plus four modifiers for more complex modulation chains.

The arpeggiator uses freely programmable patterns of up to 16 steps per sound, with timing, accent and velocity set per step. The plugin also supports 16-part multitimbral layering or splitting by key zone and velocity range, with a mixer for volume, panning, detune and transpose.

The preset browser uses an internal database with search, sort and tagging, and it can import and export sound and sound collection files.
