01Overview

Picante combines a full-range EQ with a saturation stage built from limiters, so it can add subtle warmth or push a sound into light overdrive. The developer describes it as a tool for bringing out grit in horns and vocals, and for pushing a tone to be hard without heavy distortion. A variable Q control adds another layer, letting you move the resonance toward ringing for more experimental sound design. The plugin is a collaboration with Dr Chris Warren, also known as Superhoax, and is adapted from his Picante MaxForLive patch.

Soft Saturation and Light Overdrive

Picante uses a combination of limiters and saturation to produce a light push overdrive. The limiters add a nuanced amount of nonlinearity, which the developer presents as a source of tonal depth.

Used gently, the saturation adds grit to horns and vocals. Pushed harder, it can add a soft fuzz or drive a tone toward a hard sound without the heavy distortion of a dedicated distortion plugin. Because the EQ is part of the same chain, you can shape the tone before or after the saturation.

Variable Q for Resonant and Experimental Sounds

The variable Q control lets you push the resonance of the filter toward ringing. The developer uses this to turn a saxophone into a thick, tinny sound and then morph it into a ringing percussive blast.

This makes Picante more than a corrective EQ. It suits sound design work where you want otherworldly textures from familiar sources, and it gives you a way to move from subtle coloration to pronounced resonant effects within one plugin.
