01Overview

Palm Mute Piano is built from recordings of a grand piano with the strings dampened by the player's finger, a technique that changes the attack and sustain of each note. Loot Audio samples the instrument in three articulations: staccato, sustained and pedalled. Three microphone positions can be controlled and blended separately, giving you a range of tones from tight and percussive to open and wide. The sound was captured in Studio 2 at Paper Stone Studios in Nottingham, UK, a converted cinema auditorium.

Sound Character and Articulations

The instrument is sampled across the keyrange A-1 to C5, with three articulations that cover short, sustained and pedalled playing. Staccato notes give a dry, percussive attack, while the sustained and pedalled articulations allow longer, more atmospheric phrases.

Loot Audio recorded the piano with a close, stereo and room microphone setup, using a Class A signal chain. Blending the three microphone positions lets you shape the balance between direct, detailed tone and the space around it.

Recording Space and Microphone Setup

Palm Mute Piano was recorded in Studio 2 of Paper Stone Studios in Nottingham, UK, a converted cinema auditorium dating back to 1914. The room contributes a warm, resonant quality that is captured in the room microphone recordings.

The close microphones capture the direct sound of the strings, the stereo pair gives width, and the room pair adds ambience. Because each position can be controlled individually, you can dial in the amount of room character that suits your track.
