01Overview

Rings is a resonator module that shapes sound by exciting virtual materials. You feed it energy from an internal noise burst or an external audio signal, and it resonates that input through one of three models. The developer describes it as the only software version of Rings officially licensed and endorsed by Mutable Instruments. It is available as an expansion for Softube Modular, so the module requires that host to run.

Three Resonator Models for Physical Modeling

Rings offers three models. The modal resonator emulates plates, strings, membranes and tubes, placing resonant frequencies at modes set by a material's size, shape and structure.

The sympathetic strings model produces droning and overtone textures, similar to the sympathetic resonance of instruments such as the sitar. The modulated and inharmonic string model extends Karplus-Strong synthesis, which uses a short, high-feedback delay to produce a pitched tone like a plucked or struck string.

Excitation Sources and Polyphony

You can excite the resonators with the built-in noise pulse or with an external audio signal, so any input can drive the resonant models. Timbral controls shape the resulting sound.

Rings provides up to four voices of polyphony. Each trigger generates a new virtual string, even while previous notes still ring, which allows strummed chords.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to use Rings?

Rings requires Softube Modular to run. It is supported as a VST3, VST2, AU, AAX or RTAS plugin, and a host application such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Ableton Live, Studio One or Reaper is recommended.

Which formats and operating systems does Rings support?

Rings is available in VST3, VST2, AU, AAX and RTAS formats. It runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) and on macOS Big Sur, Monterey and Ventura.

Can Rings process external audio?

Yes. Besides its built-in noise pulse, Rings can excite its resonator models with an external audio signal.
