01Overview

Haptic Perc uses microphone input to excite physical percussion models, so objects such as a jar, a plate or a pot can be played as conga, djembe or other percussion sounds. Sampleson includes two versions in the purchase: an FX plugin that processes audio on any channel and a VSTi instrument that responds to MIDI. Six parameters let you shape the surface, resonance and size of each modeled instrument, and the plugin ships with eleven presets to start from.

Physical Modeling and Sound Character

Haptic Perc is built around physical percussion models rather than sampled hits. Sampleson describes the result as a hands-on feel that resembles real instruments. The six parameters control the underlying model details, letting you adjust the surface, resonance and size of the sound. Presets include Conga, Hi Bongo, Cuban Bongo, Repique, Surdo, Large Pot, Orchestral Triangle, Old Phone, Glass Bar, Metal Click and Tic Toc, covering both traditional drums and found-object textures.

A built-in ambient HQ reverb is included as part of the controls.

Workflow: FX Plugin and Virtual Instrument

In the FX version, you connect a microphone and load the plugin on an audio channel. Any mic works, including a laptop's built-in microphone, though Sampleson recommends a studio-grade, piezoelectric or contact mic for better sound quality.

In the instrument version, load the plugin on a MIDI track and play it with a keyboard, MIDI controller or MIDI multi-pad interface. Parameters are automatable in your DAW, so you can record changes to the sound over time.
